  1. Mental Strength plays a major theme and role in this story, how does Bilbo learn to cope with this struggle ,and in turn build of it to become a stronger character?

Jayde's 'Literary Luminary' 11 / 26

On page 120 in The Hobbit, Gandalf begins to bring in the dwarves in pairs of two into Beorn's home. I thought this was a weird but funny way to bring in your party members. I couldn't understand why Gandalf didn't bring all the dwarves at once when I first started reading, but when Gandalf explained it to the group later it made sense.

1.) If you were Beorn, would you be agitated at the story being interrupted by the dwarves, or would you be eager to hear the story in its entirety and wait patiently? How would you feel having all of these strangers in your home?

week 3. literary luminary.

I thought it was kind of them to carry the hobbit around on the adventure because of the conditions he was in even though they were all just as bad.

Literary Luminary

What did the dwarves sing when they were cleaning up Bilbos house?

Hobbit blog week 3

I don't know where we are or what we are talking about because I can't read this book, it isn't interesting to me so I got bored and I am no longer able to read this.

week 3 lit luminary

From chapters 6-7

when they are fleeing from the goblins in the cave Bilbo happens to get separated from the main group my reaction to this was that he was pretty much S.O.L , and my explanation to why I think this is because he runs into Golum who seems hell bent on eating his hobbit flesh.
Open ended question : When Bilbo finds the ring in the cave he puts it on and slips out of Golums grasp, but when he returns to the rest of the group he chooses not to reveal the fact the he has found a magical ring that saved him. why do you think he chose to keep it secret ?
I really don't like doing this blog, it is boring and it is distracting for me to be in this class with the other students, I would like to be able to go to a resource room at this time, I would be able to focus a little better, and there are less distractions in there.

Thank you and have a good day!

Jayde's 'Discussion Director' Post 11 / 19

Discussion Director questions must ALL be answered fully!

1.) The Hobbits are quiet, calm people. They don't enjoy adventures or risks and prefer a warm meal over excitement. If you were a Hobbit, would you be like Bilbo and not want to adventure, or would you happily join Gandalf in a heartbeat? Explain why you'd choose to go or not, and what feelings you would have at the time.

2.) So far in the story, the Dwarves don't seem to have faith in Gandalf bringing Bilbo along. Describe how would you feel in Bilbo's shoes. In the Dwarves'?

3.) If you were Bilbo, how would you prove yourself to the other members of the group that you're a valuable member of the team? Suppose you were successful in proving your worth, how do you think things would change from then on?

week 2 literary luminary

something that i had found interesting in week 2 reading the hobbit was when they were in the forest Pg. 28-45 . the main reason that i find this part interesting is because while travling one of them thinks that he sees a light from a fire but it actually turns out to be a large group of trolls and when they move into investigate the the situation some more bilbo notices that there is a huge troll there eating a leg of mutton . and being the thief that bilbo is he trys to steal the coin bag from one of them but he is found , they grab him and tie him up and start to question him about where the rest of his friends are .

week 2 discussion director

what would happen to the hobbit if the ring were to be in the wrong hangs?

Week Two Connector (Jayde) 11 / 12

As the Connector, my job is to give you guys three questions that are open-ended, that you can connect with, and how it can relate to the real world. All three of these questions have no single correct answer and are somewhat opinionated. Be sure to explain yourself, and answer with complete sentences!

1.) Do you think there are any other reasons Gandalf chose Bilbo Baggins to be in their party? Do you think these are good reasons? If you don't think there are any other reasons, explain why. If you do think there are other reasons, list them and explain your answer.

2.) You can tell that Bilbo was nervous about changing his current lifestyle by going on an unknown adventure with complete strangers. Have you ever been afraid to change something in your life? Have you ever been apprehensive to go somewhere or do something when you didn't know what could happen? Explain your answers to these questions.

3.) Do you think the arguments and agitation between Bilbo (a Hobbit) and the dwarves (...dwarves) can represent the cultural differences of the real world? How does this represent the intolerance for differing races and cultures of today's society or societies in the past?

Literary Luminary

Page 7, 2nd paragraph

I think it was humorous how first one dwarf showed up on Bilbo's doorstep, then two, then four, etc..
What was the symbol Gandalf carved into Bilbo's green door?

Jayde's 'The Hobbit' Literary Luminary 11 / 6

The dialogue passages on the beginning half of page 5 of The Hobbit revealed more about Bilbo and the social traditions of the hobbits more than it seems. It was interesting to see the hospitality Bilbo displayed to Gandalf even though he desperately wanted the conversation to be over. The hobbits are seemingly known for their good hospitality and politeness, after all.

With these passages in mind, do you think Bilbo will continue to be so hospitable and gracious to others as the story continues?
